ABOUT

About the VProject

The VProject is a grassroots community initiative in Toledo and northwest Ohio to educate, motivate and vaccinate residents in the region and slow the spread of COVID-19. The project's goal: to vaccinate 70% of the community.

The V Project was conceived last fall by a local businessman. Since then, hundreds of leaders from industry, government, healthcare, education, non-profit, and religious communities have united in this historic effort.

The VProject is working in partnership with the Lucas County and Wood County public health departments. Organizers and volunteers have met with Gov. DeWine, Sen. Sherrod Brown and Sen. Rob Portman.

The V Project has used a variety of ways to get the word out about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, with a special emphasis on reaching out to those most vulnerable in marginalized communities.

  • V Days – a week-long effort to take vaccines to the people. The V Project hosted walk-in clinics in neighborhoods, free transportation to clinics, phone banking and neighborhood canvassing to make residents aware of clinics, and a Vaccinathon, a 48-hour mass vaccination event
  • Billboards, radio and TV spots that educate about the vaccine
  • Pin and wristband giveaways to those who've been vaccinated so that they can spread the word
  • Educational webinars and FB live events with religious leaders who are trusted in their communities and others active in the vaccination effort
  • On-site vaccination clinics – The V Project facilitates clinics by connecting organizations to vaccine providers.

A partial list of those we are working with in the community:

  • Businesses – Dana, Owens Corning, The Andersons, First Solar, and Owens Illinois
  • Healthcare Institutions – ProMedica, Mercy Health, University of Toledo Medical Center, McLaren St. Luke's Hospital, Wood County Hospital, and Toledo Clinic
  • Non-profits – United Way, Area Office on Aging, YMCA, YWCA, Lucas County Library System, and Toledo Art Museum
  • Schools – University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University, all the major public school systems in the area

  • What is the VProject?

The VProject is a community initiative to educate, motivate, and vaccinate the entire Northwest Ohio corridor to dramatically slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. To accomplish this, leaders from industry, government, non-profit, health care, education, and religious organizations have united in this unprecedented effort to effectively mobilize our community,  with a goal to vaccinate 70% of our population. Medical experts agree we need 70% vaccination rate to get to that “herd immunity” that allows us to be safe and helps our businesses, organizations and community members to thrive again without restrictions.

  • Who is leading the project?

A local businessman had the idea to gather community stakeholders to work together as a grassroots effort. There are more than 250 community leaders involved in the VProject, and more joining the effort every day. We are also supported by government leaders from Toledo, Lucas County and other communities.

  • How is the VProject being funded?

The V Project is a volunteer effort so everyone working on the committee is volunteering their time and talent. Donations are being accepted to help pay for things like educational and marketing materials, and may eventually help to defray costs for transportation and other needs related to people getting vaccinated.

  • Are goals being met?

The committee has been busy developing strategies and communication materials to educate the public about vaccine safety, availability, and resources so as supplies become more readily available, we are ready and willing as a community to get the vaccine in numbers that will help our community achieve the “herd immunity” necessary to stop COVID from disrupting our lives.  Lucas County is a leader among populous counties in Ohio so far when it comes to the percentage of people getting vaccinated.

  • What activities is the VProject engaging in to meet its goal?

Educational activities like forums, webinars and media interviews have already happened with the V Project’s help and we expect to be involved as larger vaccine drives take place and the need for volunteers becomes necessary.

  • Is the VProject reaching out to marginalized communities to make sure everyone has access to the vaccine?

Yes, we have efforts to reach all of these communities in specific ways. That’s why the committee is so important--we have educators, religious leaders, health care workers and others who have built connection and trust with people not only spreading the message to them but reporting back to the V Project committee on NEEDS for us to address.

  • How long will this project be going on?

V Project is committed for the long-haul, until we have accomplished our goal of 70% vaccination rate.

Our goal is simple and monumental: vaccinate 70% of our residents and be a model for all other cities in the Midwest.
